TLC’s ‘Extreme Couponing’ Series Premieres Tonight

TLC’s ‘Extreme Couponing’ series premiers tonight at 9PM EST. I watched the original special in December and was underwhelmed with what I saw. As with any television "reality" show they really showed the extreme part of couponing and I felt it gave couponers a bad name. Since the show aired I've read numerous reports of shelf clearing, a big no-no in the couponing circle. Yes, the participants on the show bought hundreds of items but they were ordered in advance - something the show didn't tell you.

For the record I do not consider myself to be an "extreme" couponer. I do coupon, and I do stockpile items when they are at their lowest prices but you have never seen a trip where I bought 300 of anything. (I'm not pointing fingers at anyone because every one's needs are a little different.) I pride myself on ethical couponing and encourage others to do the same. It's in the best interest of all coupon users to be honest and fair. All it takes is one bad apple to ruin it for the rest of us.

Having said all that I will be watching tonight. What can I say? I'm curious. And I know some of the people being featured so it will be interesting to see how they are portrayed as "extreme couponers".

Will you be watching? How do you feel about "extreme" couponing?

I've youtubed a lot of the 'behind the scenes' of extreme couponing. What isn't shown is that the producers are contacting these people and wanting them to make it look 'extreme'. A couple of the show's participants even said that the producers said, "make it the biggest trip with the most savings ever". And that's what they did.
I believe it's now hurting the reputation of the average/avid couponer with stereotypes like this. UGH

Exactly Breanne! I saw the same videos and read lots of comments from the people on the 1st show. But I agree with you...now there are people that think all couponers are somehow scamming the system. That's why I pointed out that I coupon ethically. I use coupons the right way - based on the manufacturer guidelines and my store policies.

And I save PLENTY. I don't have to "scam" anyone to save money & stay within budget every month. I just hate to be lumped within a certain group. :(
